Our Food Stands
Our Food Stands
An important part of our mission is to help fight food insecurity in our community. We have a full acre of our yard dedicated to growing food of all types and varieties, and grow on a scale that is far more than our family could possibly use. Any extra food that our family can't use or save, we put on one of our free food carts or donate to the Mason-Dixon Food Pantry. Currently, we have two separate stands that we operate each year. We try to replenish the stands every 2-3 days throughout the growing season.
Our first stand was a small setup at our son's daycare center. Not only did this help the families there who were struggling financially, but it also encouraged the kids to eat healthier foods. They very much enjoyed coming in every day wondering what new veggie would be on the stand to try. Seeing the success of this, we decided that we'd open a second stand on our property that would be open to the general public.
With our second stand, we wanted to provide a place to come to get food during hours that other food banks may not be operating. A place that doesn't require you to sign in, or identify or explain yourself in any way. We understand that some struggle with asking for help or making it known to anyone that they are struggling. At the same time, it also allows locals to access fresh, local produce too. We had this stand set up for the past 3 years as a "free food stand", but found that people felt funny taking food for free when they could afford it. So we are revamping and figuring out some logistics while we take the year off, but are in the process of changing it to a "pay what you can" stand, with listed prices for those who wish to and are able to pay, while keeping the food free for those who cannot. Proceeds and donations go towards upkeep of the stand and our farm equipment, funding the yearly seed-swap/giveaway, and much more that keeps our farm going. We appreciate all who visit our stand and our events! We couldn't do this without you!
